They are everyone's favorite appetizer and a super easy recipe to make at home. Perfect for GAME DAY!

What are mozzarella sticks?

Mozzarella sticks, also known as fried cheese sticks, are breaded pieces of cheese that are fried and served with sauce.

They are usually made with mozzarella cheese because it melts easily, but they can also be of other types. I mean, what is NOT TO LOVE FRIED CHEESE?!?

These are my favorite cheesy appetizers out there, and I love them with a tangy tomato sauce for dipping.

You can buy them at your favorite restaurant and even pre-cooked in the frozen section of your supermarket, but making them at home is much better!

The MOST IMPORTANT thing to remember is that you need cheese sticks, NOT regular cheese sticks. Breakaway String Cheese Sticks are made to break easily, which means they melt easily too.

How do you keep mozzarella sticks from exploding?

The best way is to make sure you completely cover the stick twice. Beating the Panko into the cheese can help it stick. Just make sure there are no holes in the lining.

Freezing the cheese sticks helps them keep their shape while they cook and prevents them from overheating, which can cause leaks.

Frying is the best and tastiest way to cook mozzarella sticks because you get that fried flavor but also because it only takes a minute or two in the oil to cook.

You can bake them in the oven or use a deep fryer! They take longer to cook, but you won't have as much of a mess.

How long do they last?

I like to enjoy mine while they are fresh or freeze them for later. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze until solid. Transfer to an airtight container and store in the freezer until ready to fry, bake, or reheat.

fryer version

Prepare them as before, but instead of frying them, air fry them! Arrange the breaded mozzarella sticks in the airfryer basket in a single layer. Spray with vegetable oil or non-stick spray.

Fry for 5-8 minutes, turning once, until the outside is crispy and golden brown. Remove to a cooking rack and serve.

What can I make with mozzarella sticks?

Enjoy them with the traditionalMarinaraSauce or go crazy with your sauces.

Tapas tips and tricks

  • For best results, freeze them before placing them in the air fryer. They will keep their shape and not overcook.
  • You can try this with thick block cheese slices if you want to change the shape.
  • Add Parmesan cheese to the panko mixture or use Italian breadcrumbs for more flavor.
  • Make sure you cover it completely. Any holes can mean leaks.
  • Panko is the best topping, but you can use cookie crumbs, croutons, chips, and even pretzels for topping.
  • Keep the oil between 350-365F. Use a frying thermometer so they don't burn.
  • Swap the milk for buttermilk for a little flavor.
  • Make a big batch and freeze for later!
