21 secrets so that my house does not smell like a dog (2023)

Does your house smell like dogs?If you've just walked into my house, you might be wondering who am I to talk about dog smells in a house. I'll be the first to admit, since moving into our new cottage last June, I've been slacking off in the cleaning department. Sometimes our house smells worse than a wet dog.

See, we bought a small 1960's house on 5 acres. The house itself is far from perfect, but the grounds, well... it was our dream come true. We are working on renovating and adding an addition this summer to make the house more livable. But in the meantime, I wasn't motivated to keep the house clean.

21 secrets so that my house does not smell like a dog (1)

Rug is NOT a dog mom's best friend

The first project we tackled was removing the red carpet in the dining/family room, as we suspected it was the source of the musty dog smell. We were told there was oak wood flooring under the carpet so we were excited to see beautiful wood under the ugly red carpet. Not only did we have to tear up all the carpet, but the oak wood as well. It was a sad day, but the wood was damaged beyond repair.

21 secrets so that my house does not smell like a dog (2)

I hold on to the wonderful comments I received on our last home..."How do you keep your house so clean with so many dogs?" Several people have asked me how we keep our house so clean and dog-free. With two dogs of our own and a rotating foster dog here and there, we've had our share of potty, dog hair, drool, and vomit accidents...you name it, we've seen it.

The secret to keeping my house from smelling like dog

I don't have a single secret to a clean house. But a long list of little things I do to keep the dog smell away. Saturday morning is my big cleanup day, but you'll find that all of the suggestions below can be daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly cleanup activities.

It's also important to note that it might not just be your house, but your dog as well. Make sure your dog is healthy and doesn't have a medical reason to smell bad. I go into health and hygiene below, so read on.

PISO

Your dog spends most of its time on the floor. It's a big part of your home, so keeping it clean is important to avoid the wet dog smell.

Dog smell in carpet can be difficult to get rid of over time. That's why I recommend swapping your carpet for hardwood or tile floors. I realize this is not a cheap renovation and it is not an option for renters. So, here are several ways to keep your carpet clean and not smelling like a dog:

1. Vacuum at least once a week

Dog hair is a fact of life when you own dogs. We swear by ourDyson pet vacuum. We had our original for over 20 years before we replaced it last year. And not because it stopped working, but because my husband felt that he didn't use the newer model's full potential.

I vacuum weekly but honestly if I had the time I could do it every day and pick up a lot of dog hair!

2. Use baking soda to deodorize rugs

Forget toxic carpet deodorants, just sprinkle baking soda on the carpet before vacuuming. The baking soda will absorb any odors that remain in the carpet fibers.

Note: Test a small hidden area in the carpet before doing the whole house, just in case.

Many of the commercially available deodorants contain harsh chemicals that can harm your dog. Think about it, your dog walks barefoot on your mats all day. And when he licks his paws, he picks up everything on his floor.

3. Clean tile and hardwood floors

If you're lucky enough to have tile or wood, it's as simple as sweeping or vacuuming dirt and dog hair. Then clean with a mop and a suitable cleaning agent.

We have part of our newbamboo wood floorsAnd I love her. I cannot recommend bamboo. It's the first hardwood floor that dogs can't scratch! And we've had solid oak floors and engineered wood.

4. Bathroom accidents happen

If you have a rescue dog or dog, you've probably had a bathroom accident at least once. Clean up potty accidents with one instantlyenzymatic cleaner like the miracle of nature. Without ours, we wouldn't have survived caring for two puppies at the same time.little green machine. We use it several times a day!

5. Clean the carpet with steam

Professionally clean carpet annually or clean it yourself. If you keep your dogs clean (see hygiene below), you may not need to clean your carpets annually, but watch for signs that your carpet is dirty.

By the time we finish renovating our new home, we won't be without carpet (I can't wait). But all my other houses had at least some carpet. We had oneBissell Carpet Cleanerthat I used when the carpet looked dirty. So every few years I would call Stanley Steamer to have them professionally cleaned.

6. Use athe dog breed

Avoid potty accidents by using itthe dog breed. Hydroponically grown weed perfect for indoor dog potty training, porch potty training for your dog or outside on your porch as a cool potty bed.

FRESH CLEAN AIR

Air quality should be a priority not just for smell, but also for you and your dog's health.

Before you reach for that can of air freshener spray, plug-in or scented candle, watch this healthy pets video.

7. Open the window

Open windows whenever possible. There is nothing better than God-given natural fresh air to get rid of dog smell. Life in Wisconsin means long winters and short summers, but even in winter I will open the windows at least once. It may be an old wives' tale, but I like to think that freezing the house kills all germs and bad smells.

8. Oven filter

Changing your furnace filters is important to keep the air in your home clean. Filters are rated with a MERV number and it is recommended to get at least a MERV rating of 8 or higher.

You can find out more about choosing the right filter here:The MERV rating system for air filters

According to BioAdvanced: Plants remove toxins from the air — up to 87% of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — every 24 hours, according to NASA research. FURNITURE AND OBJECTS

If you let your dog on top of your furniture, you should keep those areas clean as well. I love having our dogs on the couch with us when we watch TV, it's our cuddle time. But our couch definitely suffers.

13. Cover the furniture

No, not like grandma's plastic, although that will work too! We use blankets on our sofa for the dogs to lie on. So I can pick them up and wash them every week. Or if we have an unexpected visitor, it's much faster to remove all the covers and have a clean sofa in seconds.

We are planning to buy new furniture later this year so I want to buy thisdog furniture covers.

14. Vacuum the furniture weekly

Dog hair is everywhere in our house, no matter how much I clean it's always there. So vacuuming the furniture is part of my weekly routine. Even on the blankets, hair stands on end in unimaginable places.

This might be a little controversial for those of you who are born warriors. but i love mineOdoBan.

I found it when we moved into our last house. The previous owner smoked and I was looking for something to get the smell out. OdoBan works wonders at removing odors and sanitizing.

I spray our furniture, carpets, beds and use OdoBan on our clothes. It works and works great.

You can find OdoBan at some Walmart and HomeDepot stores. And even my favorite online pet store,Chewy, vende OdoBan!

Or if you preferAmazon also carries OdoBan.

If anyone tells me it's toxic to our dogs, I'll probably stop using it...so I applaud any scientific research into its ingredient list.

19. Brush your dog

Brushing your dog helps keep his coat clean and healthy. Even if your dog is short-haired, he can still benefit from an occasional grooming session. I recently ordered thesecleaning glovesand absolutely love them... our dog Bear too!

20. Bad dog breath

We all smell it, right? The dizzying halitosis of a dog panting in your face. Bad breath can be a sign of many health problems. Therefore, if you are concerned, be sure to consult your veterinarian.

The most common reason for bad breath in your dog's mouth is dental hygiene. Do you brush your dog's teeth regularly? If we're honest, I don't... I can't seem to stick to a set schedule and brushing two dogs' teeth has proven to be too much for me.

A few months ago I decided to try this water additive calledOxyfresh Oral Hygiene Solution for Dogs and Cats. It's easy because you just add a lid to your dog's water bowl every time you fill it up.

I noticed that Bear's bad breath is gone and his teeth look cleaner than they did before using it. It doesn't remove all the tartar, but it sure improves.

21. Wipe the paws on the door

I admit that I suck at cleaning the dog's paws before entering. But when you think about it, your dogs have just walked through grass, mud, dog poo, and who knows what else. Then they go straight to your house and track you everywhere.

I bought these paw towels and use them from time to time. They're strong enough to keep cleaning all four feet, but if they're really muddy I'll get a bucket of water.

using amicrofiber clothinghelps dry your dog faster and more efficiently.

wet wipesare great between baths when you just don't have time to give your dog a full bath.
